Foot drop is a neurological disorder in which an individual cannot lift their foot or toes in order to clear the floor when walking.
Foot drop is a neurological problem in which an individual finds it difficult or completely lacks the ability to lift their foot and toes up from the floor. In normal circumstances the central nervous system transmits impulses through nerves to the muscles in the lower leg, which lift the foot and toes up from the floor. If the central nervous system or the peripheral nervous system is damaged then the transmission of impulses to the muscles which lift the foot and toes is inhibited.
The lack of stimulation to the muscles that normally lift the foot and toes causes the foot to drop. Foot drop is very problematic during walking as an individual is unable to lift their foot and toes to clear the floor, resulting in a high incidence of trips and falls.
